Introduction to the Department

The department is a core specialization unit within the Africa Change Development Studies Institute. Designed as an inclusive, Pan-African knowledge-generating engine, the department focuses on addressing the deep socioeconomic, structural, and technological development gaps in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Operating within the framework of global and regional development cooperation programs - including the UN SDGs, AU Agenda 2063, AfCFTA, AGOA, TICAD, SADC RSIDP, and National Development Strategies (NDS) -the department delivers hybrid, online, and conventional educational and capacity-building programs. Its core mission is to foster an AfCFTA Immediate Scenario Change Culture and a robust analytical conscience that drives sustainable industrialization and socioeconomic transformation in marginalized rural, urban, and resettled communities in an evolving digital world.

Role of the Head/Lead of the Department

Appointed on merit to lead the department, the Lead (Chairperson) serves both an academic and strategic leadership role, responsible for:

  • Departmental Governance & Strategy: Formulating and implementing the Departmental Five-Year Strategic Plan aligned with the institute’s overall 5-Year Strategic Development Plan.
  • Team Leadership & Merit Management: Leading a merit-appointed academic and administrative team (typically a complement of 6 key academic staff corresponding to the departmental course modules).
  • Curriculum & Qualification Quality Control: Overseeing the development, standardization, and delivery of specialized courses at certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels (all coded under "...in AfCFTA driven Development and Transformation Studies...").
  • Resource Mobilization & Partnerships: Spearheading departmental fundraising initiatives, hosting local and international Visiting Senior Scholars and Honorary Fellows, and establishing strategic linkages with government ministries, industry, research establishments, and international development partners.
  • Advocacy & Executive Engagement: Facilitating specialized training modules, policy dialogues, and capacity-building engagements for parliamentarians, municipal councils, and development actors across African Member States.

Expected Technical & Research Work

Research in the Development and Transformation Studies Department is policy-oriented, evidence-based, and heavily centered on leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Fourth/Fifth Industrial Revolution (4IR/5IR) digital technologies to uplift marginalized communities. Key research priorities include:

  • AfCFTA-Driven Rural-Urban & Resettled Community Industrialization: Investigating pathways to transform local, micro, small, medium, and large-scale enterprises (MSMEs) in rural, urban, and resettled areas through digital trade, market integration, and value chain development.
  • Digital Transformation Strategies & Economic Metrics: Measuring and analyzing the impacts of digital transformation on poverty eradication, employment creation, GNI per capita growth, and cross-sector growth under the AfCFTA Economy.
  • Macroeconomic & Transformation Policy Frameworks: Conceptualizing and evaluating home-grown and continental macroeconomic models (such as AfCFTA National Development Strategies, AfCFTA Transformative Effect (ATE), and economic policy paradigms like Emmersonomia and Robertonomia).
  • Cross-Regional Comparative Advantage & Value Mobilization: Analyzing comparative advantages across Continental African regions (Southern, Northern, Eastern, Western, and Central) and evaluating strategic cross-sector value mobilization from global regions (Asia, Europe, the Americas, Latin America, and the Caribbean).
  • Sustainable Municipal & Smart Village/City Development: Formulating consultative, evidence-based strategies for rural and urban municipal development, smart villages, and infrastructure transformation.
  • Publications & Flagship Outputs: Contributing regularly to the institute's quarterly publication (Transformative AfCFTA: Southern... Sub-Saharan Africa and GLOBE Issues) and presenting groundbreaking research at the annual ASC AfCFTA Transformative Online International Conferences and national/continental policy consultative reports.
